For her Summer 2009 campaign, Katy Rodriguez cast former Gaultier muse and iconic eighties model, Leza Cruz, as her subject in a series of portraits based on the look of Mexican film queen Maria Felix. Cruz’s regal Latin beauty embodied the character of Katy’s Mexican-inspired Spring 09 collection.
Katy’s choice to use the elusive Cruz was a natural progression from her Fall 08 poster campaign featuring legendary Bananarama front woman Siobhan Fahey. For previous campaigns she has also cast model-scribe Jessica Joffe, filmmaker Alia Raza, and musician/artist Cynthia Mittwegg, to name a few.
During the height of her fame in the 1980′s, Leza Cruz was one of the most sought after faces in fashion and was shot by such masters as Steven Meisel, Guy Bourdin, Peter Lindbergh, and Jean- Baptiste Mondino. Cruz was the muse to designer Jean Paul Gaultier for ten years (1981-1991); the face of Dior & Yves Saint Laurent; and the star of campaigns by Karl Lagerfeld, Thierry Mugler, and Claude Montana.
When Cruz was asked about the experience to work with upcoming designer Katy Rodriguez, she offered, ” I was extremely flattered and impressed with Katy’s raw talent. She reminded me of Gaultier’s excitement when I met him in his early days in 1980…I was honored to go on this journey with her.”
